Im working on ethnicity as a problem for sociologists and anthropologists in Borneo...
ive got 2 articles locked down....
but I wasnt sure about what I know so far and im still not sure today....
and worst of all, ive worked on this since last 2 wks!
this is my topic:
"Discuss Different attempts to bring some classificatory order into the diversity of cultures and societies in Borneo. What are some of the problems they encounter?"
so what ive got so far are:
1)Borneo is an island full of ethnic diversity.
2)People with different cultural backgrounds and mode of life exists in many forms.
3)For Mohd. Yaakub Haji Johari, in his chapter on the "Issues In The Identification And Classification Of Indigeneous Ethnic Groups In Sabah And Sarawak", classification of the people in Borneo is a useful system, because it helps "...policy-makers and development planners to obtain better insight of relevant socio-cultural varibles internal to the relevant ethnic groups which may affect the achievement of national development objective" (pg.209)
4)But the problem with this is that, this gives a free pass for the government to put labels on the groups that they themselves might disagree with - meaning, the local groups might not accept the usually 'general' term given to them by the authorities.
5)Also, one must be able to distinguish the differences between the term 'race' and 'ethnicity' - race: physical inherited differences and ethnicity: social differences.
- okay, i do not have to write everything *very little* that I knew about this topic here-
im kind of worried about how i will do tomorrow. I hope I will not have time to present, but that would mean another wk of this topic, but then again, that would mean - F R E E D O M for this wk! either way i wont be able to escape from this... i havent have any nightmares yet, but from the looks of my preparation, tonight seemed like it could be the night...
today i was sppose to present on louis wirth urbanism theory, but there was not enough time, so mine will be postpone until next wk on tuesday... which is fine by me, but i was about 90% prepared either way.. i refused to sit still and just read out what i clearly copy and paste for my presentation - so not cool! i found many info from the net for my mini thesis - very helpful stuffs indeed! i jus need to find a time to read and analyse them...
